Would You Homeschool Your Child?

Dear Reader,
I still remember rote-learning my entire history textbook in Class 10.
Not just dates, but also neatly packaged explanations about why events happened and what they meant.
Many of you probably went through the same memorisation grind.
And the sad part? Millions of Indian children are still stuck in this pressure-cooker system today.
But some families are choosing to opt out entirely.
According to the Ministry of Education, more than 72,000 children were in home-based education in 2023-24, with many relying on the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for certifications and exams.
Joseph Jude is one of them.
As a chief technology officer in the IT industry, he told me he’d spent years noticing how unprepared many graduates seemed for the real world of work.
“I was familiar with homeschooling before. Then COVID happened, my sons’ grades started dropping, and I brought up the idea with my wife,” he said.
Five years later, his sons Josh and Jerry say they love being homeschooled.
“But you need to be curious,” they told me. “Our dad gives us time, and he has a remote job. That helps.”
And that’s the catch.
Homeschooling demands far more than just pulling a child out of school. It requires time, flexibility, emotional energy, and often, money. While parents may save on school fees, the costs of tutors, activities, field trips, and online classes can add up quickly.
It can also take a psychological toll.
Psychologist Harshmeet Kaur told me about a homeschooling mother who was deeply burned out, but felt guilty admitting it because the decision had been hers.
“And the child picked up on this,” Kaur said. “It started showing up as perfectionist and compulsive behaviour.”
So, can every family realistically homeschool? What happens to socialisation? And what are the emotional costs of stepping away from the traditional education system?
