Why More Indians Are Buying Dashcams

In partnership with

Dear Reader,

My dad taught me to drive when I was 16.

I still remember him sitting in the passenger seat, one hand hovering over the handbrake.

Every time we approached a crossing, he'd tell me to honk. Sometimes he'd even reach over and press the horn himself.

I found it rather annoying.

But now, more than a decade later, I get it.

Driving in India demands constant vigilance. Every day, people across the country report thousands of road accidents. And a crash is only the beginning. After that come the endless arguments and insurance battles.

And that’s where dashcams come in. More and more Indians are now treating them as essential. The Indian dashcam market is already worth more than USD 100 million and analysts expect it to grow at nearly 21% annually over the next several years.

Behind those numbers are people like Ravi, a tech entrepreneur who installed a dashcam about a year ago. He says it's already gotten him out of more than one sticky situation, once with a biker and another time with a vegetable vendor.

But avoiding a heated roadside argument is one thing. Can a dashcam make a difference when the stakes are higher, like an insurance claim or a court case?

"Before dashcams, we'd rely on the insured's statement and an eyewitness statement. It was essentially a narrative-based claim," Biswas Mishra, an insurance professional, told me.

A dashcam changes that. It adds something objective: evidence.

Biswas also told me that some insurers are beginning to experiment with AI-based claims processing. In those cases, dashcam footage can help resolve certain claims in hours instead of weeks.

The legal system is evolving too.

Supreme Court advocate and cyber law expert Karnnika Seth told me that dashcam footage is admissible in court as electronic evidence, provided the correct legal procedures are followed. But she also had a reality check: “It's still a niche thing. There’s little awareness about it.”

In this week's episode of The Signal Brief, I explore why dashcams are booming in India, whether they actually help when something goes wrong, and what this trend says about driving in the country today.
