More Money, Bigger Markets, Tougher Choices. What's The Catch?
The Weekend Playlist
Good morning.
India's growth opportunities are expanding. But are its business models and financial systems keeping pace?
This week, IKEA India's Patrik Antoni explains why the retailer is rethinking its store formats and local sourcing strategy, while Carnelian Capital's Swati Khemani examines why promising growth sectors do not always make good investments.
Media Partners Asia's Vivek Couto and Mihir Shah explore how e-commerce platforms are reshaping advertising economics, while DMI Finance's Arindam Das explains why more customer data does not necessarily lead to better lending decisions.
Meanwhile, Bank of Baroda's Madan Sabnavis examines the RBI's challenge of tightening monetary policy while banks hold surplus liquidity.
Across these conversations, one lesson emerges: India's next phase of growth will depend as much on adapting business models, managing capital and improving decision-making as it does on the opportunities themselves.
Here's what stood out this week.
WEEKEND EDITION
The India Reality Check For IKEA's Global Model
What does scale look like when building more large-format stores is no longer enough?
In this episode of Weekend Edition, Govindraj Ethiraj speaks with Patrik Antoni of IKEA India about how the Swedish retailer is rethinking its India strategy after slowing expansion in its early years.
IKEA entered India with the large-format model that powered its growth elsewhere. However, shopping habits are changing. Consumers are less willing to travel long distances, nearly 30% of IKEA India’s sales now come from online channels, and the retailer is increasingly turning to smaller urban stores alongside its larger outlets.
At the same time, India is becoming more important to IKEA’s global supply chain. The company sources around €400 million worth of products from India annually, largely for export, and has made the country one of its four global product development locations.
Key Insight
India’s young population, rapid urbanisation and rising household needs offer IKEA a long-term growth opportunity, but capturing it will require smaller store formats, stronger local sourcing and a retail strategy tailored to Indian consumers.
SPECIAL EDITIONS
Looking Beyond Market Hype For Investment Opportunities
Can a strong business still be an unattractive investment?
In this episode of Special Edition, Govindraj Ethiraj speaks with Swati Khemani of Carnelian Capital about finding investment opportunities beyond headline indices, identifying long-term growth sectors and understanding the role of valuations.
Khemani sees opportunities in manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and consumption, where shifting supply chains, rising domestic demand and emerging business models are creating new sources of earnings growth.
However, a promising sector does not necessarily make every company within it a worthwhile investment. Khemani points to defence, renewables and AI-linked businesses, where investor enthusiasm has driven valuations beyond levels she considers attractive. She emphasises the importance of evaluating business quality, management and valuations rather than following popular market trends.
Key Insight
A strong business is not always a good investment. Leadership, competitive strength and growth potential matter, but so does the price investors pay.
BUREAU BYTES
More Data, Same Borrower, Different Loan Rates
If lenders have access to more customer data than ever before, why is assessing creditworthiness still so complicated?
Arindam Das of DMI Finance, about how fragmented data, digital identity risks and AI are reshaping credit assessment.
Das explains that the same borrower can receive different risk ratings and loan pricing depending on whether they apply online or in person. While face-to-face interactions allow lenders to verify identities directly, online applications rely on digital information that may be incomplete or difficult to authenticate.
Yet India's consent-based Account Aggregator framework is improving access to financial information and speeding up lending decisions. At the same time, AI-enabled identity fraud introduces new challenges for digital underwriting.
Key Insight
More customer data does not automatically lead to better lending decisions. The challenge is turning fragmented information into reliable credit assessments while managing emerging digital risks.

THE MEDIA ROOM
Can Traditional Media Compete With Commerce-Led Advertising?
What happens when the platform selling a product also controls the advertising that leads consumers to buy it?
In this episode of The Media Room, Vanita Kohli-Khandekar speaks with Vivek Couto and Mihir Shah of Media Partners Asia about how retail media, streaming and AI are reshaping advertising economics across India and Asia-Pacific.
India's retail media advertising market has grown tenfold since the pandemic to around $3.1 billion, driven by the expansion of e-commerce, quick commerce and increasingly frequent online transactions.
Yet the shift towards measurable sales does not diminish the importance of brand-building. Live sports and premium content continue to attract large audiences, while commerce platforms offer advertisers something traditional media cannot easily provide: a direct link between advertising spending and purchases.
Key Insight
Advertising is increasingly shifting towards measurable business outcomes, as retail media, streaming and AI change how brands reach consumers, allocate budgets and convert attention into sales.
HOW INDIA’S ECONOMY WORKS
The Balancing Act Behind India's New Interest Rate Cycle
Can higher interest rates contain inflation when banks are already holding surplus liquidity?
In this episode of How India's Economy Works, Puja Mehra speaks with Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda, about the RBI's decision to raise the repo rate and shift its monetary policy stance to calibrated tightening.
Sabnavis explains why he favoured delaying the rate hike, given the surplus liquidity in the banking system and the potential impact on borrowing during the festive season. Yet he expects further increases as inflation remains elevated, with the RBI signalling that rate cuts are unlikely.
The challenge extends beyond interest rates. The RBI must manage excess banking liquidity, while India remains exposed to global borrowing costs and foreign capital flows despite relying largely on domestic savings to finance investment.
Why This Matters
The RBI's rate hike goes beyond borrowing costs. With banks holding surplus liquidity, the challenge is to ensure higher rates help contain inflation without unnecessarily slowing credit and consumption. How the RBI manages this balance will influence lending rates and India's growth outlook amid uncertain global financial conditions.
