Meet AI, Your New Recruiter

Dear Reader,
A is a 25-year-old Chemical Engineering graduate. AI wasn’t a thing the first time she applied for internships, when she was 21.
"I remember it was so exhausting. Studying during the day, then researching companies, editing my resume and writing cover letters. It was a lot of pressure," she said.
Today, she has automated most of that.
She has one AI agent that scouts job openings, another that tweaks her resume to match the role and a third that writes her cover letters.
A's case is far from unusual.
Recent studies suggest that around two-thirds of job seekers globally now use AI during the application process, whether that's to write resumes, generate cover letters or prepare for interviews.
That's not all.
Recruiters are adopting it just as quickly. They're now using AI for everything from sourcing candidates and screening resumés to scheduling calls and even conducting first-round interviews using humanoid AI voices.
"Traditionally, recruiters would have to go through hundreds, sometimes thousands, of applications. That would take many man-hours," said Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital, the staffing and recruitment arm of TeamLease Services.
"AI helps us identify which candidates we should connect with first," said Harjoth Sudan, who works in talent acquisition. "It can even personalise conversations and automate parts of the screening process."
So AI is saving time on both sides of hiring.
But it has its downsides.
For starters, AI can inherit biases from the data it is trained on. A hiring model, for instance, may begin favouring candidates with backgrounds similar to those of previously hired employees. Recruiters also told me that AI-generated resumes have become so common that they've become sceptical of applications that seem like a "perfect" match.
And then there's the candidate experience.
A told me that every time she uses AI, she feels guilty.
"I spent so many years studying hard... only to now automate everything," she said.
On the occasions that she doesn't use AI and instead spends hours writing an application herself, she says it can feel pointless.
After all, there's a good chance an AI system is reading it.
"If you don't use it today, you're going to be left behind," she told me. "It's a catch-22."
To understand how AI is reshaping recruitment, I spoke to recruiters, hiring experts and candidates for this week's episode of The Signal Brief.
You can find The Signal Brief on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.
